Background
Hello. I’m James, I’m a therapist based in central Manchester, and I know from personal experience how hard it can be to reach out for help—I’ve been on both sides of the therapy room.
Before training as a therapist, I spent many years working as a lecturer and researcher. Alongside that, I spent a lot of time as a client myself, which gave me a real appreciation of the power of good therapy. I eventually chose to train in Transactional Analysis (TA), a therapeutic approach that focuses on how our early experiences shape the way we relate to ourselves and others today.
In our sessions, I offer a space to reflect, explore, and make sense of things—together. I aim to meet you with warmth, honesty, and genuine curiosity as we work through whatever you bring. Therapy with me is not about being analysed from a distance; it’s a collaborative process grounded in conversation and mutual understanding.
My Approach
My approach is rooted in Transactional Analysis, which means I pay close attention to how past experiences may be influencing present difficulties. I also often reflect on the dynamic between us—our therapist-client relationship—as a way to understand what might be happening for you in the wider world.
I draw inspiration from the work of Janina Fisher, particularly her thinking around complex trauma and how we often hold multiple perspectives or ‘parts’ of ourselves in response to challenging experiences. I also incorporate ideas from psychoanalytic thinking, especially those that help us understand emotional depth and unconscious patterns.
But while I’m influenced by these models, I don’t believe therapy is about the therapist sitting in silence. I value conversation and connection, and I’ll often share my thoughts or responses if I feel it could be helpful. My goal is always to work in a collaborative, respectful, and honest way—supporting you in making sense of your experiences and moving forward on your own terms.
