About me

Hello, I’m James, a therapist based in central Manchester. I know from personal experience how hard it can feel to reach out for support — I’ve been on both sides of the therapy room, as both client and therapist. That experience showed me the real value of good therapy and eventually led me to retrain after many years working as a lecturer and researcher.

My approach is rooted in Transactional Analysis (TA), a therapy model that explores how our early experiences shape the way we see ourselves and relate to others today. In practice, this means we’ll look at how the past connects with the present, while also paying close attention to the dynamic between us as therapist and client. I see the therapeutic relationship as a powerful tool for understanding what might be happening for you in the wider world.

In our sessions, you’ll find a collaborative space to reflect, explore, and make sense of what you’re going through. I aim to bring warmth, honesty, and genuine curiosity, and I don’t believe therapy should be about the therapist sitting in silence. Instead, I value conversation and connection, and I’ll share my thoughts when it feels helpful.

Alongside Transactional Analysis, I draw inspiration from the work of Janina Fisher on complex trauma, particularly how we hold different ‘parts’ of ourselves in response to difficult experiences. I also integrate elements of psychoanalytic thinking, especially where it can help us explore unconscious patterns and emotional depth.

Therapy with me is a respectful, collaborative process grounded in dialogue. My goal is to help you make sense of your experiences, develop greater self-understanding, and move forward on your own terms.
